Brief on CRCICA Caseload and Recent Activities as of January 2020 until Mid-February 2020 26 February 2020 The year 2020 marks the CRCICA’s celebration of its 40th anniversary as the oldest arbitration Centre in Africa (1979-2020). During these years, and since its establishment, the CRCICA worked to develop arbitration and ADR mechanism in the region with specific focus on Africa as one strong whole in the heart of the universe. Remarkably, on 31 December 2019, the total number of cases filed before the CRCICA reached 1385 cases, with 82 new cases filed since the start of 2019. The cases related to various sectors, including Oil & Gas, Construction, Real Estate Development, Retail, Tourism & Hospitality, Media & Entertainment, International Sale of Goods, Pharmaceutical and IT & Telecommunications. Parties involved in these cases came from China, Egypt, Germany, Italy, India, Kuwait, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Tunisia, the United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom. The language of the proceedings was Arabic in 62 cases, while English was the language of the proceedings for 20 cases. In 2020, the CRCICA continued its contributions to enhance and develop arbitration and mediation in the Afro-Asian region. On 20 February 2020 Dr. Ismail Selim, CRCICA’s Director, presented CRCICA at a training course for the Francophone African diplomats. The course was organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' Institute for Diplomatic Studies during 16-27 February 2020 in Cairo. Attended by 15 African countries’ diplomats, the lecture of Dr. Selim focused on international commercial arbitration with an emphasis on arbitration in Africa. Moreover, CRCICA’s Deputy Director Dr. Dalia Hussein spoke at the International Colloquium organized by the African Academy for International Law Practice (AAILP) on: Evaluation of the Right of Investment and Arbitration in Africa, 26 February 2020, Paris. The speech of Dr. Hussein focused on: The Egyptian experience in investment arbitration and the need to reform BITs. Also, in January and February 2020, Dr. Selim delivered the last two parts of a four round training course on International Commercial Arbitration organized and hosted by the Riyadh Chamber of Commerce in KSA. Furthermore, Dr. Selim was a panelist at the Mediation Forum organized by Abu Dhabi Global Market Arbitration Centre on 4 February 2020, Abu Dhabi, UAE. The speech of Dr. Selim outlined the CRCICA’s experience and practice of ADR and mediation. The abovementioned activities came alongside CRCICA’s in-house events. On 14 January 2020, the CRCICA organized and hosted a seminar titled: The development of international law and investment arbitration in a new era. The speaker was Ms. Annette Magnusson, Secretary General of the Arbitration Institute of the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce (SCC) and General Counsel of the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce. CRCICA also organized and hosted in cooperation with the Egypt Branch of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) two seminars in January and February 2020 successively. The first seminar was titled “The Impact of Emerging Technologies on International Arbitration: Cybersecurity, Blockchain & Smart Contracts and Artificial Intelligence”; and the second was on “Update on the Prevention Principle in UK Law: Is There a Role for Good Faith? |
