28 August 2020 CRCICA’s Caseload ▪ On 20 August 2020, the total number of cases filed before the Cairo Regional Centre for International Commercial Arbitration (“CRCICA”) reached 1426 cases, with 25 new cases filed since 1 April 2020. ▪ The cases related to various sectors, including Construction, Real Estate Development, Tourism & Hospitality, Oil & Gas, Pharmaceutical and Corporate Restructuring. ▪ Parties involved in these cases came from Bahrain, Belgium, Egypt, France, Italy, Malta, Norway and the United Kingdom. ▪ Arbitrators appointed in 2020 came from Australia, Canada, Egypt, France, Ireland, Italy, Lebanon, Nigeria, Tanzania, Tunisia, the United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom. ▪ The language of the proceedings was Arabic in 10 cases, while English was the language of the proceedings for 14 cases. ▪ Since 1 April 2020, CRCICA has hosted 19 hearings. Of these 19 hearings, 10 hearings were held with full in-person attendance, with social distancing respected through the use of multiple virtually connected hearing rooms, 3 hearings were held with partial in-person attendance and remote attendance and 5 hearings were held via videoconference. CRCICA also hosted the remote witness testimony for an ICSID case. Joint Message in Response to the Coronavirus Pandemic from CRCICA and 11 Leading Arbitral Institutions
▪ On 16 April 2020, CRCICA and 11 leading arbitral institutions published a joint message in response to the coronavirus pandemic. The Statement was a message of solidarity and cooperation where arbitral institutions affirmed their commitment to work together to provide an effective response to the challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Paris Arbitration Week - Session on International Arbitration in Africa: Perspectives on Virtual Hearings and the Africa Arbitration Academy Protocol
During the second and third quarter of 2020, CRCICA contributed to significant African activities. On 6 July 2020, CRCICA’s Director, Dr. Ismail Selim was a Panelist at the Paris Arbitration Week in the session on “International Arbitration in Africa: Perspectives on Virtual Hearings and the Africa Arbitration Academy Protocol” organized by the Africa Arbitration Academy in partnership with AfricArb and hosted by Hogan Lovells, Paris. |
