Highlights from YMG Activities April - June 2024

The past quarter has been an exciting period for the young members of the African Arbitration Association (“AfAA YMG”). Their enthusiasm and commitment to advancing the field of arbitration in the continent of Africa have been truly remarkable. From engaging in thought-provoking panel discussions to spearheading innovative initiatives and participating in key networking events, these young professionals are shaping the future of arbitration in Africa. In this newsletter, we are delighted to showcase a glimpse of the AfAA YMG members’ significant contributions and the dynamic activities they have undertaken in the past quarter. Join us in celebrating their accomplishments and exploring the impactful work that has defined the last month.


Mispa Awasum spoke on "Solving Financial Disputes to Foster Commerce & Development in Africa" at the International Arbitration & ADR Conference, which took place from May 15-17, 2024, at The Nairobi Serena Hotel, Nairobi, Kenya and on “Navigating Career: Advancement in Alternative Dispute Resolution in the Contemporary Landscape” which was organised by CIArb Kenya Branch’s Young Members Group conference.

Mispa also attended the 8th ICC Africa Conference on International Arbitration in Nairobi, Kenya.


Muleba Joseph Chitupila attended the ICCA 2024 Hong Kong Congress (26th ICCA Congress) held from May 5-8, 2024, under the theme "International Arbitration: A Human Endeavour.". Moreover, we are immensely proud to announce that Muleba has been elected as the new Young Members Group (YMG) Chair of CIArb Zambia.

Lauraine Darkwah participated in a fireside chat organized by The Young Arbiters Society of the University of Nairobi, Kenya, on "The Prospects of International Arbitration in Africa." and “Master-Class: Special Skills for Arbitration: Counsel, Arbitrator and institution Skills” which was organised by CIArb Kenya Branch’s Young Members Group conference. Both events took place in Nairobi, Kenya.

Additionally, Lauraine has been selected to participate in the 5th Africa Arbitration Academy Flagship Training Programme 2024.

Raoul Elola attended the second edition of the WBF in London from April 23-24, where he participated in discussions on International Arbitration, International Taxation, EU & US Immigration, and Business/Real Estate Investment. He also represented AfAA YMG at the 8th ICC Africa Conference on International Arbitration in Nairobi, Kenya.

Herman Omiti attended the 8th ICC Africa Conference on International Arbitration in Nairobi, Kenya as well as speaking at the CIArb Kenya 40th International Arbitration and ADR Conference, where he participated in a panel discussing “Public Policy and the Enforcement of Arbitral Awards”.

Samantha Masenegli also attended the training delivered by ICC on Dispute Boards, the 8th ICC Africa Conference on International Arbitration, and the Africa Construction Law (ACL) Conference in Nairobi, Kenya. She was also a member of the conference planning committee for the CIArb Kenya 40th International Arbitration and ADR Conference held in Nairobi, Kenya.

Samantha moderated a panel on “Tech-Enabled Dispute Resolution: Navigating the Intersection of Artificial Intelligence, Advanced Technologies and Dispute Resolution” which was organised by CIArb Kenya Branch’s Young Members Group conference and a fireside chat organized by The Young Arbiters Society of the University of Nairobi, Kenya, on "The Prospects of International Arbitration in Africa.".

Ranna Musa has been selected to participate in the 2024 - 2025 ICC Advanced Arbitration Academy for Middle East.

We are extremely proud of the achievements of our young members and their contributions to the field of arbitration. Their active participation in regional and international conferences and educational programs reflects their commitment to excellence and their role in shaping the future of arbitration in Africa and underscores their outstanding involvement to best represent African practitioners both within the continent and abroad. Let us continue to support and celebrate their endeavors as they pave the way for a more robust arbitration landscape.

AfAA YMG members continue being committed to enhancing and highlighting the arbitration landscape in Africa and are thus partnering with various young member groups across the continent, including the Young Arbiters Society, and are engaged in several exciting projects.
